Victorian Aesthetic Movement Ebonised Writing Table with Gilt Detail and Leather Top
A handsome late 19th century ebonised writing table in the Aesthetic Movement taste, c.1870–90. The rectangular top has a moulded edge and an inset panel of tooled brown leather with a gilt border, softly worn to a lovely mellow colour. Two frieze drawers sit beneath, with a gilt-lined edge to the apron. The corner blocks are fluted and picked out in gilt, and the slender turned legs taper and are fluted with incised gilt lines. They end in brass cappings and original-style ceramic or brass castors, so the table moves easily. The black finish is subtly worn, with gilding catching the light at the edges. A good size for a desk, it would also make a striking console, hall table or dressing table.
