Legend of the Moor Heads
Around 1100 AD, when Sicily was ruled by the Moors, a beautiful girl living in seclusion spent her days cultivating flowers on her balcony. One day a young Moor passing by saw her and declared his love. The young girl reciprocated and fell deeply too. The young girl discovered the young Moor was married with children and was soon to return home. On the night before he left, he stayed with the Sicilian girl who waited until he fell asleep and cut off his head. She then used his head as a vase to display her flowers which thrived. Neighbours envious of her vase and blooms began to create beautiful ‘Moor Head’ vase.
