Huntley & Palmers ‘Syrian’ Novelty Biscuit Tin, circa 1903
A rare novelty biscuit tin by Huntley & Palmers, Reading, formed as a hexagonal Moorish table or kursi and manufactured circa 1903 by Huntley, Boorne & Stevens. Every surface is covered in densely lithographed Orientalist decoration: scrolling arabesques and floral motifs on the lid, interlaced strapwork panels to the sides, and a principal face featuring a six-pointed star medallion in red, gold, and teal on a black ground. Raised on six bracket feet with pointed horseshoe arches. One foot is missing.
The underside retains the original Huntley & Palmers transfer with royal warrant to His Majesty the King. Wear and paint losses throughout, consistent with age. A striking and collectable survival of Edwardian novelty tin design.
