Ewe Kente Cloth, Ghana / Togo, Mid-20th Century -Mounted

TET106

A fine example of Ewe strip-woven kente, constructed in the traditional manner from narrow loom-woven cotton strips sewn selvedge-to-selvedge. The characteristic weft-float patterning creates a shifting grid of rectangular blocks across the cloth, the design varying subtly between strips in the manner distinctive to Ewe weaving.

The palette — deep burgundy ground with sage, teal, mustard, orange and cream accents — is relatively restrained compared to Asante kente, reflecting the Ewe tradition of more muted, earthen tones. Presented mounted and ready to hang.
