Chinese Four-Panel Wall Screen, Gilt Ground Painted with Flying Wild Geese and Peonies

A decorative four-panel Chinese wall screen, hand painted on a distressed gilt ground in the Chinoiserie taste. Two geese, with spotted plumage in slate blue, taupe and cream, fly over blooming peonies and swaying reeds. Pale pink-white peonies with sage-green foliage sit on the left, and feathery pampas grass on the right. The panels are edged in black lacquer with a fine gilt line border and hang from pierced brass fretwork hangers. The aged, mottled gilding gives it a soft, timeworn glow. It would work well hung as a single wall piece over a console or mantel.
