Anglo-Chinese Painting of a Shelduck on Silk, Canton, 19th Century
A Chinese export painting on silk of a common shelduck, in the Anglo-Chinese manner made at Canton for the European market. The bird stands in profile on a rocky bank, with finely modelled plumage in green, white, chestnut and black. Behind it, a calm sea with three sailing vessels and pale blue hills sits under a turquoise sky. Presented in a Victorian bird's-eye maple frame with a gilt slip, glazed. Good condition, with fine surface cracking, small paint losses and light fraying to the silk at the right edge.
