19th Century Country House Open Chair
A handsome Victorian open armchair, presented in its stripped-back state and ready for you to make your own. The frame retains its original turned front legs and elegant baluster arm supports, finished in a rich, dark polish and set on the original brass castors.
The seat and padded arms are covered in a simple ivory calico, while the back has been opened up to reveal the original black curled horsehair stuffing, still holding the shape of its traditional deep-buttoned pattern. The hessian and webbing on the reverse show the honest construction of a chair built by hand, giving a wonderful insight into nineteenth-century upholstery techniques.
Whether you choose to reupholster it in a fabric of your choice or embrace its raw, deconstructed charm as it is, this is a chair with real character. Comfortable, generously proportioned and full of history, it would make a striking statement piece in a sitting room, bedroom or study.
Condition: Wear consistent with age and use. The frame is sturdy, with marks and patina to the woodwork. The calico shows light marking.
